Needs can be satisfied. Wants never can. Happiness hides on the line between them.

September 23, 2026

The list of things you need to be happy is short. What is surprising is not how short it is, but how few people know it.

A need has an end. Thirst ends with a glass of water. Tiredness with a night’s sleep. Loneliness with a familiar voice. Every need reaches a point where it is complete, and there it stops.

A want has no end. The moment you get what you wanted, it makes room for the next one. “More” is not a destination but a direction. You never arrive at a direction; you only keep walking in it.

Little and enough are not the same thing. Little tells you how much you have. Enough tells you what is complete. You can own a great deal and never reach your enough; someone else reached it long ago with little.

A life spent chasing more never fills up, and it starves the needs along the way. Most real needs are not won once and set aside. They are rebuilt every day. Love lives on care, friendship on time, peace on attention. More feeds on exactly that time and that attention. While you chase what will never be enough, you stop tending what already is, and you end up short on both sides.

What was missing was never a possession. What was missing was a line.

The line of enough.

If you don’t know your line, you can’t know when you have arrived. Every gain becomes a stop along the way, and at every stop you can see the next one.

If you know it, life divides in two. Everything below the line is a need to build and protect. Everything above it is a choice. Without the line, wants feel like necessities and drag you along. Once the line is drawn, the same wants become choices, and the direction is yours again.

Where does this line stand in your life? Did your last big decision strengthen something below the line, or chase something above it? What below the line paid for the time you spent above it?

Meaning lives in the time that remains once the needs are met. If your needs go unmet, you cannot turn to meaning. If you believe your needs are endless, meaning never gets its turn. The day the line is drawn, an empty space opens in front of you for the first time, and for the first time you decide what fills it.

Whoever knows their enough gets to choose the rest of their life.
